Michael David Sutherland
Adjunct Professor
Michael Sutherland holds an M.Sc.E. and Ph.D. in Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada specializing in land information management and GIS. He is currently a lecturer, and the Programme Coordinator of the B.Sc. in Land Management Programme, in the Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.
He previously held post-doctoral positions at the University of Ottawa and Dalhousie University, Canada where he did GIS research in relation to multi-criteria decision analysis supporting socioeconomic and environmental phenomena. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics and the Institute of Surveyors of Trinidad and Tobago, and is an elected member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He is also an Associate of the Canadian Fisheries, Oceans, and Aquaculture Management (C-FOAM) research group, Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa, Canada. In 2011 Michael was appointed as an Honourary Fellow, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. In 2012 he was appointed as an adjunct professor in the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, University of New Brunswick. Michael is currently Chair (2011-2014) of Commission 4 (Hydrography), International Federation of Surveyors.
Michael has:

- Lecturing at the University of the West Indies on theories and concepts of Fundamentals of GIS, GIS and Society, land law, land economy, professional practice, cadastral systems, and land information management;
- Lecturing at the University of New Brunswick, Canada on the theories and concepts of land and coastal administration;
- Lecturing at the University of New Brunswick, Ryerson University, and York University Canada on the theories and concepts of real property law, survey law and cadastral systems;
- Course design and training development.
- More than 20 years work and research experience in land management, land administration, land law, property; and
- More than 10 years GIS and GIS-related experience (work and research) gained from:
- Enterprise Wide GIS needs assessment and situation analysis preparation for a government agency;
- Developing sea level rise predictive models using GIS to support socioeconomic impact analysis;
- Developing a prototype marine cadastre using web-GIS technology;
- Developing GIS data and products in support of policy and program initiatives;
- Using GIS to analyze the cumulative effects of marine ecosystem components when dealing with site selection for aquaculture;
- Using GIS in aquaculture site evaluation to predict benthic characteristics;
- Using GIS to assist in the assessing the economic impact of Atlantic fisheries;
- Developing functional and technical specifications for spatial databases;
- Developing software related to land administration and management.
